The main treatments for add are medication and psychosocial therapy (psychotherapy). These medications include stimulants like amphetamine and methylphenidate, and nonstimulants like atomoxetine, clonidine, guanfacine and viloxazine.

Stimulant medication are not recommended for patients with active substance abuse problems but they are an option for those who are in stable remission. Combination treatment with antidepressants (particularly SSRIs) is also an option.

The kind of medicine prescribed is based on the biochemistry of each person and how they react to it. It could take between five and seven days before the full effects of the medication become apparent. Increased concentration, improved memory, better sleep and reduced impulsivity are all signs that the medication is working.

Some of the adverse effects include decreased appetite, difficulty sleeping and an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Certain people with medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart disease, shouldn't take these medications. They are controlled substances that are prone to abuse. Only psychiatrists or pediatricians or in certain cases general practitioners, may prescribe stimulants. You can find them in the form of tablets, pills, patches that go on the skin or in liquids.

Children and adolescents who take stimulants are often affected by weight loss and appetite problems. If the dosage is too high, they can also develop the tics. In this situation the doctor will decrease the dose to prevent the drug from worsening symptoms.
